How to Mix Wella ColorCharm Toners?

First, you need to make sure you have everything you need to tone your hair at home.

You will need:

  • Wella ColorCharm Toner (1 or 2 bottles dependent of hair length and
  • 10 or 20 Volume Developer
  • Application Bottle (this will make application easier than using a bowl)
  • Tint Brush
  • Pair of Gloves
  • Processing Cap (optional, but keeps toner from dripping)

Mixing ratio 1:2 ratio

How Many Bottles Of Wella Toner Do I Need?

One bottle is recommended for hair that touches your shoulders and is fine/medium thickness. With toner, you really want to make sure you fully saturate your hair - this will ensure you don’t get any patchiness. For thicker or longer hair, I recommend two bottles.

Which Developer To Use With Wella Toner

Your toner must be mixed with a cream developer. Developer (also called peroxide) activates the toner - without it your toner won’t work.It is recommended to use 20 Vol Developer with Wella Toners, but you can also choose to use 10 Vol Developer if that suits you better.

20 Volume Developer: This is the stronger choice.
Use 20 Vol Developer with your toner if you are looking to go lighter with your toner, if you’ve just bleached your hair and your hair is uneven, or if you’re seeing a lot of brassy yellow tones. 20 Vol Developer gives the most permanent results.

Pro Tip: Be careful with 20 Vol Developer if you have natural roots, as this strength developer will lighten your hair slightly, which can make natural roots look brassy.

10 Volume Developer: This is the more gentle choice.Use 10 Vol Developer with your toner if your hair is damaged or you have lots of natural colour (think balayage) as it’s less likely to alter your natural hair. 10 Vol Developer is also great if you’re looking to go slightly darker with your toner, or if you’re looking for the most powerful toning results on brassy orange hair.

Pro Tip: Use a combination of developers for best results. Try using your toner with 10 Vol Developer on your hair closer to the roots and then mixing your toner with 20 Vol Developer on the mid-lengths and ends. The result? Brass free roots and light bright ends.

How to Apply Wella ColorCharm Toners?

Once you have decided on a shade, you will need to purchase some supplies to apply the toner. Make sure to grab a developer, dye brush and bowl, and a pair of gloves.

Before using the toner, remember to perform a strand test. To do this, mix the developer and toner according to the instructions until it forms a gel. Select a strand of hair to test it on and see if the results look the way you want. If you are happy with the way it looks, it is time to apply the toner using the following steps:

1. Apply in sections – you want to paint the toner over your hair in thin layers. Ensure that the entire section is wet. You can start from back to front or vice versa, depending on what feels more comfortable.

2. Let it Work – Toner may change colors during the processing time, and that is completely normal. You will have to leave it on for 8-10 minutes to achieve a lighter shade, and 20-25 minutes to achieve a darker shade.

3. Wash it Off – Once you are done allowing your hair to process, you need to thoroughly wash and condition your hair to rid all product out of your hair.

4. Style Your Hair – Whether you prefer to air dry or style your hair, proceed with your hair care as usual. Once it is thoroughly dried, you should see the full effect of your hair.
